As the smallest and most densely developed community north of Vancouver, it forms part of the Metro Vancouver regional district. The Lions Gate Bridge, officially named the First Narrows Bridge, is a suspension bridge that opened in 1938. It spans the first narrows of Burrard Inlet, linking the City of Vancouver with the North Shore communities of West Vancouver, the City of North Vancouver, and the District of North Vancouver. Its name pays homage to the Lions—two prominent mountain peaks located north of Vancouver—toward which northbound traffic on the bridge is directed. In January 1939, sculptor Charles Marega’s cast concrete lion statues were installed at the southern entrance, symbolically marking the gateway.
